New Commissioner is committed to collective action

The Social Democrat Neven Mimica calls for more rights for consumers. Consumer spending accounted for 56 percent of EU gross domestic product.

Brussels / Vienna / Apa. Nominated by Croatia as EU Consumer Protection Commissioner Deputy Prime Minister Neven Mimica, calls for new standards for consumer protection. "The markets have to work for the consumer and not vice versa," the Social Democrat called for the hearing of the competent committee of the European Parliament on Tuesday.


Consumer spending accounted for 56 percent of EU gross domestic product, as Mimica. This means that consumers play an important role in boosting economic growth and promoting innovation and sustainability games. The legal framework for consumer rights should be consolidated. Mimica also wants to ensure that a legal framework was created for a class action. This should at the same time respect the national legal traditions.

Mimica stressed he is doing also important to work with international partners such as China. "All products that are sold in Europe, including imported products must comply with strict safety requirements."


Reduction of energy costs

In any event, there are also many areas where consumers could save money through better protection. "As it comes to the reduction of energy costs, lower bank charges or goods with better quality and longer shelf life."
